Music & Memory

The Therapeutic Power Of Music
They say, “Music soothes the soul,” because it does, but it also soothes the mind and supports memory function, as certain sounds cue memories from the past.
Eastridge offers the nationally recognized program, Music and Memory, to all residents. Music and Memory is a personalized music system that uses custom playlists to enhance residents’ quality of life, and improve their memory and well-being. When residents listen to music, it’s not uncommon for them to suddenly start dancing or humming along as the melody takes them on a blast to the past.

Eastridge residents enjoy music playlists created from their personal tastes and interests, in addition to recommendations from family, friends, and our staff. Aside from songs, playlists can include audio books, radio shows, pod casts, faith-based teachings, and even personal messages from family members. The playlists are downloaded to iPods so residents can listen to and connect with the music they love whenever they please.

Music and Memory is a program rapidly sweeping our nation and is proven to result in numerous benefits grounded in neuroscience research. Specific songs can cause the mind to time travel, unlocking fond memories tucked away or milestones from the past.

Our residents truly love the Music and Memory program and frequently experience benefits, such as:

  • Decreased feelings of depression
  • Reduced dependence on anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety medications
  • Reduced agitation and sun downing
  • Improved social engagement with family, friends and staff
  • Increased cooperation and attention
  • Decreased fall risks
